says. he doesn't speak for us. since john boehner has been speaker, since early 2011, the house has had real trouble just doing basic run of the mill governing stuff. bills failing unexpectedly and needing to be pulled at the last minute and tried again. the republican leadership's own legislation failing to get enough republican votes to pass. and that happening in public because they couldn't count it properly in private? they did get better at all the symbolic stuff that does not have real world consequences. they may not have been able to find their way through the constitution on the first day in the majority. but they did figure out how to fake symbolically repeal obama care 33 separate times. it didn't mean anything, but when there were things that didn't mean anything that were just symbolic, ultimately they figured out that they could get some of that stuff done. but when things really did matter, like in the debt ceiling standoff, when the republicans decided to block something they happily voted for dozens of times under republican presidents, they did end up having to vote t

that was used in the new town tragedy. i am very proud to join and senator feinstein oppose the bill that will help put a stop to the proliferation of the assault weapons that have no purpose but to kill and maim human beings. we need to do something about the high-capacity magazines also used a in the killing at sandy hook elementary school. better background checks, more of them so the 40% not covered are in fact done. when they are done, more comprehensively and effectively. other measures relating to mental health need to be part of the solution. there is no simple single solution. we need a dialogue among people commited to common sense, sensible solutions. the nra will have to alter its approach if it is to be taken seriously adventurist national debate. thank you. >> let me quickly brief you on where senator blumenthal and i are. let me just indicate that the new center that will be sworn in -- center that will be sworn in in saturday said he wanted to play a major role and really help work the bill. he was absolutely dedicated to it. both of us are grateful for that. we are w

. a voice to tell us about their children, how special they were, the lives they lived. we don't want to just focus on how they die. we want to focus on how they lived and the lives they touched and they have touched so many lives. we'll hear from the mcdonnell family who graciously invited us into their home to tell us about their bright, talented 7-year-old daughter grace. grace was laid to rest today. her funeral today. there were also funerals for olivia and for dylan and for mary and for rachel. we remember them all. dylan hockley moved to newtown from england just two years ago. he was 6 yearsoles old. a special needs child, his parents chose this community for the good reputation of the sandy hook elementary school. dylan flourished at sandy hook thanks in large part to his special education teacher anne marie murphy who works with him one-on-one. the houckleys kept a picture of ann marie rr on their fridge, and he would point to it every day. on friday, he died in her arms as she tried to shield him. his parents say they take great comfort in knowing he wasn't alone when he di

person can ever possibly comprehend them. they walk among us every single day. and does anybody really believe that the next adam lanza isn't planning his attack on a school? since when did a gun automatically become a bad word? a gun in the hands of a secret service agent protecting our president isn't a bad word. a gun in the hands of a soldier protecting the united states of america isn't a d word. and when you hear your glass breaking at 3:00 a.m. and you call 911, you won't be able to pray hard enough for a gun in the hands of a good guy to get there fast enough to protect you. so why is the idea of a gun good when it's used to protect the president of our country or our police but bad when it's used to protect our children in our schools? >> to be clear, this wasn't a press conference. it was a statement. no questions were taken. that doesn't mean there weren't any interruptions. >> stop killing our children. it's the nra and assault weapons that are killing our children. >> protesters accused the nra of having blood on its hands. i'll be speaking to one of those in a moment. way

should go up for the wealthiest individuals, all of us, every single one of us, agrees that tax rates should not go up for the other 98% of americans, which includes 97% of small businesses. every member of congress believes that. every democrat. every republican. so there is absolutely no reason not to protect these americans from a tax hike. but the very least, let us agree right now on what we already agree on. let us get that done. i just spoke to speaker boehner and met with senator reid. i have asked congress to work on a package that prevents a tax hike on middle-class americans, protect unemployment insurance for 2 million americans, and lays the groundwork for further work on growth and deficit reduction. that is an achievable goal. that can get done in 10 days. once this legislation is agreed to, i expect democrats and republicans to get back to washington and have it passed both chambers. i will immediately signed it into law before january 1 of next year. averting this tax hike is not a democratic or republican responsibility. with their votes, the american people have det

for those of us who have been watching politics for years to see a speaker of the house fail so miserably to win support for his own measure. so that means the president is really not negotiating with anybody who can really make a deal. he can't cover any check that he'd write at the oval office. i've said all along the real issue is whether boehner can bring along his caucus for anything. he really can't and it puts everything in a tough position. but the president does end up with a more reasonable upper hand. i think jared is right. >> but the other thing i would just alert you to is, once they get through this, i think what happened last night and what's happening this week is really a bad, a bad omen for what the republicans might try to do once again on the debt ceiling in january or february. >> president obama argued tonight that both parties can agree taxes for the middle class cannot go up. let's watch what he said. >> in ten days, we face a deadline. even though democrats and republicans are arguing about whether those rates can go up for wealthest individuals, all of us agree
